Redistributing quality clothing to our city's homeless community.
Midland Park, CBD
June 22, 2016
Wellington's first Street Store was hosted by the team from The Free Store. The Street Store model encourages people to "hang up and help out" by creating pop-up clothing stores in prominent public spaces where quality clothing can be made available to the homeless and urban poor at no cost. We ran this event because we daily engage with friends who are, or have been, homeless. We know that winter is a difficult time for those without a roof or adequate housing - it can be cold and miserable. We wanted to ensure that every person who is homeless has warm clothing and nutritious food over winter.
With the help of Recycle Boutique, the Wellington City Mission Store and members of the public our volunteers were able to redistribute nearly a thousand items of clothing and sleeping gear to a hundred people. The Free Store will continue to run a Street Store pop-up twice yearly: in summer and winter.
